GoRoots were asked to provide an Air Spade and Crew recently to excavate proposed Pile Caps to check for tree root activity. The brief was to remove the existing paving slabs excavate a trench to a depth of 600mm using the air spade in order to find any underground services and possible tree roots from a pair of giant London Plain Trees.
The trench was less than 1.5m from the base on trunk of one of the trees and it was expected to find substantial root activity. In the event the only roots found were in the sand layer onto which the paving slabs wer laid. in the deep trench we found an electricity and telephone duct but amazingly nothing else.
Following an inspection by the Local Authority Tree inspector and a representative of the design team it was decided that no action was required.
In order to allow the normal functioning of the site during the works we carried out the excavation at night. Had any roots been found then as a matter of course we would have covered the exposed roots with Hessian and made arrangements to have this kept moist in order to avoid the root mass drying out.
Despite finding no evidence of tree root activity it was agreed that without the Air spade it may well have been that vital design may have been made on the assumption of root activity. Because we now know the exact situation then drawings and plans can now be made saving time and money for the design team.
After the satisfactory inspection the trench was filled with the original material and the top layers compacted to allow the replacement of the paving slabs so that the foot path could be used until the redevelopment can begin
